REPORT ON GLOBAL HANDWASHING DAY, October 15, 2014

Health is the essence of life. To spread aroma of health; Mendrelgang Middle Secondary School observed  Global handwashing day with the theme ‘Clean Hands Save Lives’ which is aimed at increasing awareness and understanding about the importance of hand washing with soap as an effective, affordable and key approach to prevent diseases.
The campaign was initiated to inculcate in the minds of students a strong sense of “healthy body is healthy mind” through building of good hand washing habits, bringing simple but important behavioral changes in our students.

Global Hand washing Day was observed by displaying banners and posters. Delivered the speeches highlighting importance of marking the day with theme talk on it. Hand washing demo, dance, and video clip were presented and some messages and commitments were also gathered from the participants.

The international day was observed with the following specific objectives:

1.      To disseminate the purposes and importance of marking the Global Hand Washing Day

2.      To educate students and teachers how to wash hands through proper methods by following 8 steps of hand washing.

3.      To raise awareness among teachers and students on the importance and benefits of hand washing with soap (for example using the toilet, while cleaning a surrounding, after doing SUPW, and before handling food).

4.      To educate children on germ and germ transfer from surface to surface and elimination through proper hand washing methods.

5.      To learn proper hand washing skills

6.      To develop hand washing habit with soap

7.      To prevent from diarrheal and respiratory diseases

8.      To lead healthy life

In the midst of concerns for the coverage of syllabus, we could create ZERO period before the assembly for this important international Hand washing day. Through this TWO hours program, we could garner full interest and participation from all students and staff alike, thereby, achieving the set objectives.

The program was organized by Health Club with full support from the school administration. We thank all health club members and other volunteers for their full and active participations. With the same token, we also thank and appreciate Comprehensive School Health Division, Department of Youth and Sports, Ministry of Education for their financial support.
